CASE STUDY - MORTGAGE ADVICE BUREAU

Redefining Culture to Accelerate Performance, Growth and Innovation

Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB), one of the UK’s leading mortgage advice brands, wanted to future-proof its culture while undergoing a major transformation project. With 200 businesses and 1,500 advisers, they needed a cultural framework to connect strategy, people, and performance. They believe everyone should have a home and already help over 100,000 customers with buying their first home or dream home, but they also want to grow and widen their offering to bring the MAB-magic to even more key moments in life.

The challenge

MAB was already undertaking a ‘transformational change project’ driven by technology, to simplify and improve the customer and adviser journey. But the leadership team knew that without a unifying culture, the transformation risked stalling.

Their key challenges were:

MAB was already driving a tech-led change programme to simplify the customer and adviser journey. But the leadership team knew that without a unifying culture, the transformation risked stalling.

The solution

We stress-tested and refined MAB’s Mission, Vision and Values, then co-created a cultural blueprint called “MABology”. This gave everyone a shared narrative and clear set of behaviours – aligned to regulatory and ESG expectations – that could be lived consistently across the organisation.

We launched this new cultural identity through an online event, engagement programmes (Friday Joy, MABfest, MABplause), and series of team workshops with facilitation guides

The process

Delivered through our award-winning 3-stage methodology:

Insight

Established a Culture Design Group of leaders, managers, and colleagues to surface real issues and define the future culture.

Design

  • A new Mission, Vision and DNA was designed through facilitated exercises with the Design Group – which was named MABology
  • A supporting strategic narrative was created that the CEO/Founder, leaders, managers and staff could all connect with about the MAB organisational change journey – connecting past, present and future.
  • A launch and 12-month employee engagement model based on our 4Es of Human Change principle was developed and implemented, including an online Launch Day Live Event.
  • The DNA (Values) were developed into a set of behaviours which could be used for talent attraction, recruitment, induction, performance management and development – These included the regulatory and ESG expectations to provide a single source of clarity of expectations for everyone, and ensure a conduct culture.
  • Developing an implementation road map, including identifying the changes required for embedding the DNA into the end to end employee lifecycle.
  • Trained leaders and managers on the behaviours and how to use them best with their teams, as well as identifying where they were role modelling behaviours and where they need to focus their own improvements.

Embed

Once MABology launched we needed to make sure it was truly embedded into the MAB DNA.

We did this by:

  • Developing an implementation road map.
  • Post launch employee engagement initiatives to get them in a routine and rhythm for ongoing success including Friday Joy, MABfest and MABplause.
  • Creating facilitator guides so managers could run MABology workshops with their teams to help individuals and teams understand what MABology meant to them and how they needed to change their ways of working.
  • Providing mentoring support to key MAB people to keep momentum and overcome any challenges.
  • Establishing key cultural metrics so they can track the change.

The result

MABology is now embedded across the employee lifecycle. Staff report stronger communication, improved alignment, and a deeper sense of pride in the business. Culture is no longer an abstract idea – it’s a daily lived reality driving engagement, performance, and growth.

The project was incredibly fulfilling both personally and professionally. Seeing our MABology culture take shape and come to life has been brilliant. I’m so proud of everyone who worked on the project, but special thanks must go to the team at Culture Consultancy who really helped us get to where we are now.
